5 Senses Gift Challenge: Unique Ideas for Sight, Smell, Sound, Touch, & Taste

We have all been there. A birthday or anniversary is coming up, and you ask him what he wants.

His answer? “I don’t know. I don’t need anything.”

Men are notoriously hard to shop for. You don’t want to get him another pair of socks, but you also don’t want to spend a fortune on a gadget he might not use.

Enter the 5 Senses Gift.

If you haven’t seen this trend on Pinterest, here is the concept: Instead of one big gift, you give him five smaller gifts, each labeled for one of the five senses.

  1. Sight: Something to see.
  2. Sound: Something to hear.
  3. Smell: Something to smell.
  4. Touch: Something to feel.
  5. Taste: Something to eat/drink.

It is brilliant because it turns simple items into a thoughtful “experience.” It shows you put effort into it.

Here is my curated list of ideas for every sense (that aren’t boring).

1. Sight (Something to See)

  • The Sentimental Idea: A framed photo of your favorite memory together. You can print it in black and white for a classic look.
  • The Experience Idea: Tickets to a movie or a concert (seeing a show).
  • The “Cheeky” Idea: A nice piece of lingerie for you to wear (a gift for him to look at!).
  • The Practical Idea: A pair of high quality blue light glasses if he works at a computer all day.

2. Sound (Something to Hear)

  • The Tech Idea: A high-quality Bluetooth speaker for the shower. (Seriously, everyone loves shower karaoke).
  • The Personal Idea: A vinyl record of his favorite album. Even if he doesn’t have a record player, the album art looks cool on the wall.
  • The DIY Idea: Create a Spotify playlist called “Songs that remind me of you” and print out the QR code on a nice card.

3. Smell (Something to Smell)

  • The Classic: A new cologne. (Tip: Savage by Dior or Bleu de Chanel are universally loved).
  • The Car Guy Idea: A high-end car air freshener (not the cheap pine trees—think sleek, minimalist clips).
  • The Cozy Idea: A “Manly” scented candle (Scents like Mahogany, Teakwood, or Leather work best).

4. Touch (Something to Feel)

  • The Comfort Idea: A weighted blanket. If he deals with anxiety or trouble sleeping, this is a game-changer.
  • The Wardrobe Idea: A super-soft cashmere sweater or a high-quality hoodie.
  • The Self-Care Idea: A nice beard oil kit or a massage coupon (redeemable by you!).
  • The Tech Idea: The Bond Touch Bracelets (If you are long distance, these vibrate when you touch yours).

5. Taste (Something to Eat)

  • The Fun Idea: A DIY “Movie Night” box with his favorite candy, popcorn, and soda.
  • The Fancy Idea: A bottle of his favorite whiskey or a craft beer sampler pack.
  • The Sweet Idea: Order cookies from that bakery he loves but never goes to because it’s “too far.”
  • The Sauce Idea: A “Hot Ones” style hot sauce challenge pack (if he likes spicy food).

How to Package It

The presentation is half the fun!

  1. Get 5 separate gift bags or small boxes.
  2. Print out cute tags that say “Sight,” “Sound,” etc.
  3. Arrange them on the bed or table so he has to open them in order.

Tell me in the comments: Which sense is the hardest for you to buy for? For me, it’s always “Sound!”
